In the last part of the Distort history lesson, I spoke about when I started writing Distort, while living in a squat in Sydney. One year before my time of hunger in the squat attic, I was living in a rathole flat near the beach in Wollongong and studying philosophy at university.

Hardcore from Detroit, early 80’s, songs about hatred, self destruction, songs about fighting, songs written after winning fight. Every single day I would listen to Negative Approach on my Discperson on the long walk to and from class and I would hate everything I saw and everything I thought of:

the clouds,

the cars,

the people,

Plato.

I would walk and hate everything but the walking, the Discperson, Negative Approach and Detroit. I thought of Detroit as spirit home - I thought of The Stooges and Negative Approach as spiritanimal, as mentors. I had retreated into studying and …
